The One Hitter Quitter!

Description

Jacquila Reed had spent her still short lifetime working on the science of prosthetics.  Her father had lost both his lower arms in Vietnam, and growing up seeing the struggles her dad had with the primitive prosthetics of his day gave her a determination to build something better.  She excelled in math and science, eventually getting a full scholarship to Stanford, where she was allowed to pursue her interest at the Rehabilitation Engineering Center.  Her brilliance and her personal drive moved her from success to success.  MS and PhD came in rapid succession.  Then her crowning achievement - fitting her father with prosthetic arms of her own design!  But only days later, tragedy!  Her father was hit by a stray bullet when an obscure all female gang robbed a bank where Mr. Reed was doing business.  Her father lay in a coma for days before succumbing to his wounds.  Jacquila was never sure he heard her last words to him - "I love you."

Jacquila's grief went through many stages - denial, bitterness, rage, fear, depression.  But her final stage was to make a resolution.  She would use her knowledge to do what the authorities were unable to do.  She would bring justice to these murderous criminals, with the only means those thugs understood - violence!  While still working at the Rehabilitation Engineering Center, Jacquila spent her nights and weekends working on a project of a very personal nature.  She developed a pair of leg fittings and gloves for herself that would give her nearly super-human strength.  Her leg fittings would enable her to run tirelessly for hours, to leap hundreds of feet and land with the deftness of a cat.  Her gloves were fitted with all kinds of tools, which could be used to quietly open locks, but which also gave them a force up to 2,000 times greater than a normal human hand.  The police were unable or unwilling to tackle so many of the worst criminals.  But now Jacquila would become a high tech vigilante, using her powers to take down the baddies!

Her starting point, naturally enough, was to wreak vengeance on the gang that had killed her father.  They were known as the LILAC's, and they were under the command of Purple Vixen, the most ruthless villainess in town.  Using a tip she received from the detective who was working her father's case, she arrived one evening at a seemingly abandoned warehouse.  She noticed there were cameras, so she just paced back and forth near a non descript door.  Soon enough, two women clad in the purple body suits of the LILAC's appeared.  "Bingo!" Jacquila thought to herself.  "I've found the right place!"  The two women approached menacingly.  "You!" one of them barked at Jacquila, "Scram!"  They had to have been wondering what the odd fittings on her arms and legs were.  But their tone of voice did not indicate they were much concerned about them.  "Is there something about 'Scram' you don't understand?!" one of them said.  "I'm not going to scram until you let me into this building," Jacquila said perfectly honestly, although very nervously.  "I need to talk to Purple Vixen."  The two LILAC's laughed.  "YOU want to see Purple Vixen?!" the one LILAC said.  "What makes you think she's even here.  Now get the fuck out of here before something bad happens to you!"   But Jacquila just stood her ground.  "I'm not going anywhere," Jacquila said with steely resolution in her voice.  "That's it!" the lead LILAC said.  "Now you're gonna get it!" And both LILAC's rushed at Jacquila.  But before they got three steps, Jacquila sent her right fist in a wide arc.  KAPOW! Using much less than full power, Jacquila's punch knocked both women off their feet, sending them in an almost cartoonish arc as their bodies floated over the ground before landing with a THUD!  Both women were out cold, and were likely to remain so for a very long time.  Jacquila smiled as she looked over the two KO'd LILAC's.  "Well, that went even better than expected!  I used only a fraction of my power and was still able to deliver ... what do they call it ... a one hitter quitter!"  Jacquila strode toward the now unguarded door to the warehouse.  "Now, let's see what kind of mischief I can get into here," as she pulled the door open and stepped into the darkness.

Many thanks to :icondualmask: for this awesome commission.  I asked him to use one of his many 'doodles' of heroines to go against my LILAC OC's.  He did an awesome job of showing the action.  I hope he likes the backstory I gave to Jacquila.  I just thought his original image of Jacquila was amazing.  Check out his page for many more such examples.

Dynamic art. Great color.

What a backstory. Sad to hear the LILACs were involved in the death of someone! Nice writing.
